TA wrote that Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson’s frequent hamstring injuries have become a thorny problem.
Since joining in 2016, he has missed 14% of the team's Premier League games and suffered serious hamstring injuries five times in the past three years. The latest injury is expected to keep him out for around six weeks, leaving the club and fans frustrated.
TA delved into the multiple reasons behind his injury. First of all, Alisson was injured in various ways, including strains when driving hard, and injuries when chasing back at high speed. A physiotherapist pointed out that Alisson's unique running posture, lacking the key technical action of "swinging the leg back", may cause his hamstrings to bear extra load in the long term.
Secondly, the anonymous team doctors and experts consulted by TA emphasized that once a serious hamstring injury is encountered, the risk of recurrence will increase dramatically, which is the biggest risk factor. In addition, the intensive schedule of modern football has also exacerbated the injury problem.
In terms of injury diagnosis, experts have also put forward new insights. Surgeon Professor Hildes pointed out that hamstring injuries are uncommon among goalkeepers and it is crucial to accurately assess the severity of the injury, as underestimating the injury may lead to a premature return. Professor Rowena-Johnson added that static MRI scans alone are not enough for a comprehensive diagnosis, and more accurate information can be obtained by combining dynamic ultrasound examinations.
