According to exclusive reports from Reuters, three high-level crystal foundry businesses under Intel are about to retire, and it is expected to have a significant impact on the internal structure of the business.

After the new executive Chen Liwu's big sword reform, Intel informed employees at the end of last month that Kaizad Mistry and Ryan Russell, the vice president of the Technology Development Group (simply TDG), will retire; the other is the vice president of the Design Technology Platform department and former high-level IBM Gary Patton, who has also retired at IBM. He served as a senior and highly respected veteran in the semiconductor industry.

Kaizad Mistry and Ryan Russell have been involved in the research and development of Intel's process technology for a long time, and are responsible for many core tasks in TDG, including supervising ongoing development tasks and formulating technical development strategies.

As for Gary Patton's duties, it includes providing a complete design platform solution for the Gyro Foundry customers, including the development of process design kits (PDKs), EDA tool support verification, IP library establishment and design regulations, etc. His core goal is to ensure that customers design can successfully apply Intel's processes, achieve performance and power consumption requirements, and produce volume at high yields. Before joining Intel, Patton served as Grofonte and IBM for five and 20 years.

Sources revealed that Intel is also reviewing the structure of the technical development department responsible for formulating the manufacturing process. It is reported that Intel plans to enlarge its capacity planning team and lay off some engineering team manpower.

In response to this, Intel refused to respond further.

Intel 18A R&D is about to retire, Micron's former high-level helm process and manufacturing

Foreign media Tom’s Hardware believes that this wave of high-level changes is closely related to the reorganization of the technical development department launched by Intel since the beginning of the year. Intel's vice president of technical development, Ann Kelleher, will also retire later in 2025, ending his more than 30-year Intel career.

As for Intel's former veteran of Micron's process technology, Naga Chandrasekaran, took over as a global executive as former executive Pat Gelsinger. In March this year, Chandrasekaran's vocational scope further expanded, covering technical development and manufacturing businesses. He also started team reorganization soon and cooperated with the company's global postponement plan to conduct relevant personnel adjustments.

Reported, Chandrasekaran has integrated R&D and mass production into one after the upward trend, with the goal of improving yield, shortening the process introduction process, and enhancing process consistency. Another Navid Shahriari was also promoted to Vice President (EVP), mainly responsible for post-process operations, including packaging, testing and advanced packaging strategies, and promoting the layout of chiplet integration and testing technology.

This series of high-level job-departures is Intel's push for a large-scale cost-cutting plan. Executive Director Chen Liwu said the goal is to reduce the number of employees around the world to 75,000 by the end of the year, with a layoff of about 22%. At the same time, the company promised to adopt a more serious strategy for manufacturing investment.

In addition, the advancement of the next generation 14A process will determine whether new major customer orders can be obtained, otherwise there may be risks of temporary suspension or even end. Chen Liwu pointed out, "We are working closely with large external customers to build the Intel 14A process from scratch. In the future, investment in 14A will be based on confirmed customer commitments."
